What is Spiritual Direction?

What is spiritual direction?

Spiritual direction is a  relational process in which an individual seeks guidance, support, and insight in their spiritual journey from a trained and experienced spiritual director. This practice is often associated with various religious and spiritual traditions, but it can be secular in nature as well. Spiritual direction provides a safe and confidential space for individuals to explore and deepen their spiritual life, beliefs, and experiences. Spiritual direction involves a one-on-one conversation between the director and the person seeking guidance. The director actively listens and engages in a supportive, nonjudgmental dialogue, helping the individual to reflect on their spiritual experiences, questions, and concerns.

Spiritual direction is a supportive and collaborative process that can help individuals on their spiritual journey, regardless of their specific beliefs or religious affiliations. It is a means of deepening one's spirituality and gaining insight into life's profound questions and experiences.

Spiritual direction is a relational process where a trained spiritual guide listens to and accompanies someone who wants to deepen their relationship with God. The person seeking direction shares stories of their encounters with the divine or how they are cultivating a life attuned to spiritual things. The spiritual director creates a safe space where the seeker can honestly reflect on what God is doing in their life.

Spiritual directors are not therapists or counselors. They are spiritual companions who help people discern the Holy Spirit's movements and follow the inspirations of grace.   They do this through deep listening and sometimes asking questions.

Spiritual directors are not teachers or drill sergeants. They offer presence and a listening ear. They also offer wisdom and sometimes help people pray, imagine, and dream. Spiritual directors are not there to impose or dictate what should be done. They are there to help people discern the Holy Spirit's promptings and hear God's voice. They also help people see where God is speaking in their daily lives.

Who is spiritual direction for?

What does spiritual direction look like?

The frequency and duration of spiritual direction sessions can vary. Some people meet with their spiritual director regularly (e.g., once a month), while others have occasional sessions as needed.

The relationship between the director and the person seeking guidance is built on trust and confidentiality. It's a safe space for open and honest discussion.

How much does a spiritual direction session cost?

I use a sliding scale of $40-$90 per session and I allow the seeker to determine what they would like to pay for the sessions. I accept Venmo @beebabin or PayPal @beebabin.   As lay spiritual directors, we invest financially in our ministry in terms of ongoing training, professional dues, supervision, education, and materials. Therefore, we accept donations towards our ministry; however, the inability to pay will not be a hindrance to receiving spiritual direction.  It's important to me to make spiritual direction accessible to everyone, so if that cost range is prohibitive, feel free to pay what is comfortable for you.  All are welcome.

The first session is complementary. In this session, we can get to know each other and talk about what brings you to spiritual direction. You can learn more about what happens in a session and ask me any questions you have. In this initial session, we can also decide together if spiritual direction with me is a good fit for you. If I am not a good fit for you, I’d be happy to connect you with other spiritual directors.
